Conference on Romani Linguistics 2010

The Etymological database of the Saami languages Álgu is now available through English and German interfaces. The database was first published in Finnish and Saami at the end of 2006.

Names of countries in seven languages

– Each name is presented in Finnish, Swedish, North Saami, English, French, German and Russian.

The Research Institute for the Languages of Finland

The Research Institute for the Languages of Finland is a national research centre and expert institution for linguistic studies. We study Finnish, Swedish, Saami languages, Romany and Finnish Sign Language.

Our main tasks include language planning, compilation of dictionaries and various research projects. We have an extensive library and comprehensive linguistic archives.


The Research Institute’s on-line data service ‘Kaino’ is available at kaino.kotus.fi. In English is available The Etymological database of the Saami languages.
